Princeton, Minn. February 23, 2015 – The AMSOIL Championship Snocross tour made it’s first-ever visit to Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago, Illinois where Trevor Leighton turned in a pair of top five finishes in the Pro Lite finals, to retain the number two spot in the championship.
The purpose-built NHRA drag race facility at Route 66 is a crown jewel among racing complexes and made for a nearly perfect snocross stadium. Ample seating with great site lines, spacious pit lanes and corporate amenities, just down the road from the third largest market in the U.S. were a welcome addition to the ever-growing status of the national tour.
Trevor Leighton started the weekend feeling almost 100% after aggravating a shoulder injury in New York. However, as the laps built up during Friday practice and qualifying the soreness began to re-emerge. “It’s been more of a mental thing for me,” said Leighton. It’s not that I can’t hang on early in the weekend, but I start thinking about it and wondering if my shoulder is going to pop out of place. I may have a little bit of a biceps tear where it attaches under my labrum and that’s what really starts to swell up by Saturday. I hate to just ride around in salvage mode, so I just have to get over it mentally.”
Despite it being somewhat of an “off” weekend, Leighton never qualified lower than fifth and with fourth and fifth place finishes in the main events, only dropped a couple of points to class leader Ryan Springer.
Corin Todd struggled a bit in qualifying this weekend going 9-9 on Friday after having to serve a stop-and-go penalty in one round for jumping the start. Todd recovered for a seventh place finish in the final, meeting his season goal of consistently finishing among the top 10. On Saturday it looked like he might be in for another top five run, however a broken suspension arm would ultimately force him to retire early. Nevertheless, Todd gained another position in the standings, moving to eighth and regaining the lead in the Rookie of the Year tally.
This week the team will stay on the road as we travel to central Michigan for the Soaring Eagle RAM Trucks National in Mt. Pleasant on February 27-28.
